Trees in Ukraine: the symbol of memory and will for the future
Trees in Ukraine are probably the last thing you would expect to hear about in the context of the last four years. However, for Ukrainians, it is quite the opposite.
The last century, which passed under the extreme oppression of Russia, hurt green Ukraine the most. The Soviet Union destroyed our orchards, but even worse, it instilled a completely unnatural attitude towards trees and tree management. Now a new generation of Ukrainians has grown up, a generation that did not know Russia and its methods. A generation that has begun to remember and revive the importance of trees.
The bright star of this generation was Semen Oblomei. A forestry student, he discovered arboriculture and wanted to learn how to care for trees, not just use them. When the war came to our home, Sem could not stand aside. He died defending our home and his brothers in arms. His family took up his passion, and now the Semen Oblomei Foundation is developing arboriculture in Ukraine.
The Semen Oblomei Foundation conducts educational activities in Ukraine, adapting and disseminating knowledge of modern arboriculture. Our big goal is to preserve the trees that our ancestors saw for our children. Our goal is a green and peaceful Ukraine.
